S D Q R Strategy for Reading or Writing

S Says:

* Reading: What does the text say?

* Writing: What do I know the text should say?

D Doesn't Say:

* Reading: What doesn't the text say? What do you read between the lines--infer?

* Writing: What parts will the audience be able to figure out on their own? What hints will you give?

Q Questions:

* Reading: What questions do you still have?

* Writing: What questions are not yet answered in your writing? What does the audience still need to know?

R Reflection:

* Reading: What thoughts or connections do you have about the text?

* Writing: What connections does the readers need? What do you need to add? When finished writing, what goals do you have for your next writing project?
